Building Spatial Algebra and Number Sense in Junior High Math (7-9)

This session is a hands-on session exploring activities that use spatial reasoning to better understand the operations of algebra. By using physical objects for visualizing number operations, algebra skills and number sense are developed. Students need the opportunity to create their own visual sense of the math operations and algebraic manipulations that are to be used with ease. By helping the student's develop their own spatial sense of the math concepts, the students will be able to better perform mathematical operations (numerical and algebraic). As mathematics is the gateway to STEM opportunities, it is important to find more ways to improve the spatial sense of students' thinking in order to improve number sense and algebra. Wood cubes and graph paper will be used. Please bring your own graph paper, 50 cubes (or you can use the presenter's cubes), and $2 if you wish to purchase a bag of 48 cubes.
