Helping Adolescents Grow as Readers

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Do you love the feel of a new book? Do you save up a pile of books to read in the summer or sneak time in during the year amidst your marking piles? Do you wish you could help more students find the joy in reading? Come explore current thinking in adolescent literacy and leave with ideas for enriching your ELA classroom. We will highlight methods that support adolescent readers to engage meaningfully with diverse texts, become more self-aware of their strengths as readers and look closer at what it means to develop vocabulary skills and grammar in context. Secondly, we will discuss how to introduce and manage book clubs and other techniques for putting students in the drivers' seat and getting them to read with a passion. Come prepare to share your own success stories and book titles that get rave reviews in your class!
