Developing Passionate, Skilled Readers in a Digital Era

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Teachers recognize the value of developing competent, passionate readers. But this is a tall order in a world where Minecraft, Netflix, iPad games and extra-curricular activities are big draws for students and in many cases, they can simply wait for the movie adaptation! How do we meet this challenge and help students connect with books in a rewarding way? Come participate in an interactive session where we will review current pedagogy and explore strategies designed to engage all readers. We'll dust off tried and true concepts and highlight methods to build confident, strategic, self-motivated readers; enhance fluency, word attack skills and vocabulary; and deepen comprehension by facilitating rich conversations and writing about what we read. Participants will be invited to share their own success stories and highlight titles of children's books that get rave reviews in their classrooms, including read-aloud and book club titles.
