Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Everything we teach in math is tied to big ideas in Math. They are the core math concepts that can serve as an organizing structure for teaching and learning. They are the key math concepts young children should be wrestling with. They represent what we are meant to be assessing! Having a strong understanding of the Big Ideas: - builds on young children's informal math knowledge - promotes inquiry into basic math concepts via logical and critical thinking - gives students a deeper understanding of math - leads to stronger mental math skills and automaticity of facts - leads to long term understanding that goes beyond one context and transfers from one number system to another - empowers learners to be successful at solving all levels of formal mathematics problems and informal problems they encounter in their daily lives. We will look at how to get students to generalize these concepts to help them realize that "math" does not change when we work with different number systems.
