Comparing and Operating With Fractions

Every example and activity in this presentation will have a context, model or image to relate to while comparing and operating with fractions. This also allows us to portray the strategies used, reveal the big ideas behind solving the problem and see the math in action. It also allows us to talk about the math rather than just get answers. Topics covered include: - there is important ground work to be done before we ask students to operate with fractions - build number sense before resorting to any algorithm or procedure - connections between division and fractions - scaling and simplifying vs. reducing - using arrays and T-charts to build algorithms
