The Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA), a branch of Service Alberta, has a mandate to educate, advocate, and mediate for Alberta’s residential, farm, and small business electricity and natural gas consumers. A key goal of the UCA is to inform and educate Alberta energy consumers about choice of energy retailers, product options and the tools available to help make informed choices This session provides information and advice of particular interest to those working with young adults and others moving out on their own and making utility-related decisions for the first time. The session explores utility consumer rights and responsibilities, choices, and advantages and disadvantages of competitive and regulated rate electricity and natural gas services. There will also be discussion of the UCA's role in empowering consumers and where to get help if things go wrong.
