Fort McMurray Evacuation: In loco parentis Redefined

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Kevin Bergen is the principal of Fort McMuray Composite High School. On May 3, 2016, he watched as the fire know as "The Beast" approached his school. It forced the evacuation of 90,000 people, and with it 11,000 students. What followed was unprecedented in the teaching profession, as school staff were forced, in some cases, to choose between their own families, and the lives of the children in their schools. Mr. Bergen will share his personal experiences of the reality of "in loco parentis" in a whole new light. He will also share the experiences trying to create a "new normal" for staff and students who have returned to the community and school.
